Brief History
Platted by the California Lumber Company in 1876 and incorporated in 1907, Madera gets its name from the Spanish word for wood or lumber. Before emerging as a wine trail, the city was a key player in the lumber industry and was home of the longest lumber flume in the world. Yosemite Avenue, the main thoroughfare, was paved in 1912.
