Before the influx of settlers in the 1850s, the Mi Wok, Mono, and Chukchansi nations laid the foundations of a robust cultural heritage for California Native Americans in Oakhurst. In 1851, a group of Native Americans, displaced from Yosemite by Captain Burney’s Company, escaped and later established a rancheria below the old Ahwahnee Sanatorium. They erected a roundhouse for ceremonial purposes more than a decade later, a testament to their enduring connection with the land. Despite facing destruction, the roundhouse was tenaciously rebuilt in 1904.
